Project
Public events / Conferences
It is important that the citizens of Lviv and members of the city administration learn more about the ways urban development and the preservation of cultural heritage are dealt with in different cities and in different countries. The project therefore invites international specialists to exchange experiences in conferences and to give public lectures about their work.
Conferences
- “The Integrated Development of the Old City of Lviv as an Effective Instrument for Urban Sustainability"
An increasing number of Ukrainian cities have become interested in integrated urban planning concepts. They are widely used across Europe as effective instruments for the inter-departmental coordination and monitoring of projects and project proposals in a city, and they are extremely useful to the efficient planning of a city’s budget and the raising of external funding.
The project therefore organized a two-day conference on this topic in November 2011 in order to present the Integrated Development Concept for the Old City of Lviv, and (?) for delegates from other Ukrainian cities to share their experiences of urban development with each other and experts from other countries.
The presentations given at the conference and further information about the Integrated Development Concept for the Old City of Lviv can be found here (→ 2.2.).
In November 2010, the project together with the Museum of Ideas and the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe organized an international conference on the potentials of rivers in cities and the prospects for the River Poltva in Lviv, which was diverted into an underground canal that incorporated the city’s sewage system during the 19th century. Urban planners, waterway specialists and water treatment experts from different countries presented their experiences and discussed the problems and possibilities for city rivers, and for the Poltva in particular. The conference closed with a showing of a series of films about the Poltva and a talk by the films’ director.
The conference was held in conjunction with the workshop “Why Regenerate the Poltva River?” in which working groups devised various ideas for publicizing the need for action on this issue.
The presentations given at the conference can be found here. Further information about the conference and the workshop can be found on the Museum of Ideas website
Public lectures
The project has organized a number of public lectures and panel discussions by architects, urban development experts and urban planners on their work and experiences in various European cities. Single lectures have been given for example by the former German State Secretary for Building and Urban Development.
There have been panel discussions on, for example, the impact of large sporting events such as EURO 2012 on city regeneration and development, with national and international panellists.
In addition, the project organized the “Schwarzbrotvorträge” (the “Bread and Butter Lectures” so named because of the everyday concerns of the lecturers.) The lectures were given by urban planning professionals from different German cities:
- “The Second Life of Former Industrial Areas”: Michael Römer of the Town Planning Department of the City of Hannover
- “The Project ’Social City’ – an Instrument for the Renewal of Deprived Urban Districts in Germany”: Alexandra Mahler-Wings, Project Coordinator in the City of Kiel
- “The Borough of Spandau – Rescuing the Centre of Berlin”: Maria Berning of the Berlin Senate Department of Urban Development and the Environment
- “Intelligent [Urban] Shrinkage”: Dieter Rink of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) Leipzig
