Conference on Integrated Development
The first time an integrated urban development concept was adopted in Ukraine was when the Lviv City Council formally approved the “Integrated Development Concept for the Historical Old City of Lviv” on April 21st 2011.
Integrated urban development concepts are widely used across the EU, and an increasing number of Ukrainian cities have become interested in them. They have many benefits: they are effective in strengthening inter-departmental cooperation; they provide a systematic way of monitoring and coordinating projects and project proposals in a city; and they are extremely useful to the efficient planning of a city’s budget and the raising of external funding.
The project therefore organized an international conference, “The Integrated Development of the Old City of Lviv as an Effective Instrument for Urban Sustainability”, in order for representatives of Ukrainian cities and experts from other countries to share their experiences of urban development. The conference took place at the House of Scholars in Lviv on the 14-15th November 2011.
Reasons for the conference
1. To present the Integrated Development Concept for the Historical Old City of Lviv to delegates from Ukrainian and other cities, and to explain the advantages of such a concept for the development of policies and options for their implementation.
2. To inform delegates about the possibilities of support for urban renewal from national and international agencies in terms of cooperation and financing.
3. To strengthen the exchange of experience between policy makers and experts in the field of urban development.
4. To discuss and agree to a cooperative effort to draw up a national urban development policy for Ukraine and have it adopted by the Ukrainian governments.
