Funding program on balcony renovation
Note! The funding program on balcony renovation is closed due to the completion of the project.
Balconies are an important element of a building. This is particularly applicable in Lviv, where balconies in a wide range of architectural styles help characterize so many of the city’s historical buildings.
The historical balconies of Lviv, while being aesthetically important to the facades of individual buildings, shape the overall appearance of the old town. At the same time, they are open-air extensions of the buildings they are attached to, and their use increases the quality of life of the buildings’ inhabitants.
But because balconies are constantly exposed to the weather (frost, rain, temperature variations, etc.), they are also among the most vulnerable parts of a building.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of maintenance over the last half-century, many, if not most of the historical balconies in Lviv are in an extremely bad state of repair, to the extent that some are in danger of collapsing.
The project is working with the City of Lviv on a series of pilot measures for the repair and renovation of historic balconies in the old town. The project is providing technical support and is co-financing the measures. Preparations began in 2011 when selected balconies in need of repair were documented and renovation programmes for each were prepared.
Since then, 11 balconies have been renovated in six different buildings: No.9, Dudayeva Street; No.17, Krakivska Street; No.12, Fedorova Street (4 balconies); No.29, Fedorova Street (2 balconies); No.10, Levytskogo Street; No.10, Rynok Square; and No.21, Doroshenka Street.
All the measures are financed jointly with the respective owners, who contribute a lump sum of 500 UAH. The remaining costs are covered in equal parts by the City of Lviv and the project.
The total investment so far amounts to 710,000 UAH, of which the owners’ contributions total 5,500 UAH.
Five local companies were involved in the renovation work, each accompanied by an expert from the project.
