Pedestrian infrastructure improvements
An important component of integrated urban development is improvement of the transport situation and infrastructure. Lviv’s challenges include improvement of streets and sidewalks, accessibility of the historic city for pedestrians and cyclists, and development of pedestrian zones. One of the priorities is creation of modern standards for arrangement of safe pedestrian crossings.
With this in mind in 2014 on initiative of public movement “Let us go!” uniting active citizens who want to live in a safe and comfortable city, and with support of the project “Municipal Development and Rehabilitation of the Old City of Lviv” the first contrast lighting on pedestrian crossing has been installed at Chornovola Avenue. The choice of this pedestrian crossing has been impacted by survey conducted among the city community, as well as traffic accidents statistics and data on the traffic intensity in the area. New street lights are bright and energy efficient. This lighting helps to increase pedestrian safety at crossings in the evening and at night, helping drivers to notice pedestrians in advance and avoid accidents.
Through this project participants tried to demonstrate how government, business and community effort can unite people around the idea of accessible pedestrian infrastructure and quality public space.
In 2016 implementation of the second pilot project of safe pedestrian crossing in the historic centre of the city of Lviv is planned. Here first of all a technical solution that would harmonize with historic environment shall be found.
