Project
Bicycle ring around the Old Town
Lviv is the first Ukrainian city where an integrated approach to cycling development is applied. In recent years the city approved the strategic concepts of cycling development, as well as creation of walking and parking areas. These include construction of bicycle paths network with total length of 268 km, creating differentiated parking and pedestrian areas in its central part and active promoting of bicycle as an everyday, modern and environmentally friendly transport in Lviv in 2011-2019.
In 2012-2013 at the expense of the city and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH interdisciplinary working group has developed design and estimate documents for internal bicycle ring. This around the historic city will be an important part of the future cycling network aimed at combining cycling routes and residential areas of the city and allowing citizens and visitors to comfortably and smoothly move across the historic centre of the city, thus creating a new-quality public space.
Bicycle ring construction will stimulate development of tourism and other businesses; will reduce traffic flows in the city centre and have a positive environmental impact, including reducing CO2 air emissions. At the moment, raising funds for the project is on-going as its implementation requires around 5 million UAH (as of 25/02/2014)
